Kibera Fashion Week: Creative Industries and Self-Confidence

Screening of “Kibera Fashion Week” and Panel Discussion

"We have glamour in our own streets, let's acknowledge that" - Avido

 

On July 3, David "Avido" Ochieng from Kibera, Nairobi will be our guest at Turistarama cinema and show us the documentary on Kibera Fashion Week, an event to empower artists in one of the largest informal settlements on the African continent. This will be followed by a panel discussion on impact- and creative industries in East Africa and Q&A session with these guests:

  • David "Avido" Ochieng, founder of Lookslike Avido and co-initiator of Kibera Fashion Week
  • Dr. Kalie Cheng, co-founder of PlasticToBeans, "Schlürfen For A Better World": The Cologne-based impact start-up has been burning for the love of specialty coffee from Ethiopia and the vision of making the plastics industry more sustainable since 2018
  • Patricia “Treesha” Wambui Mwaura, artist and singer, lives in Cologne and combines genres such as reggae, RnB with her East African roots
  • Moderation: Dr. Gerda Kuiper, Senior Researcher at the Global South Studies Center (GSSC) of the University of Cologne

 

Schedule:

6:00 pm - Admission

6:30 pm - Film screening: Kibera Fashion Week (original with English subtitles)

7:30 pm - Panel and Q&A

8:30 pm - Performance by Treesha

9:00 pm - Closing

 

We will provide East African finger-food and a welcome-drink, more is available at your own expense.
