Short Bio
I am currently a Ph.D. student under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Susanne Brandtstädter. My research topic is the platform economy in China. Specifically, I explore the moral and immoral actions of different actors in the emerging food delivery industry, as well as how these actions evolve through ongoing negotiations. Based on these observations, I further investigate the types of markets that are continuously being shaped.
Before joining the anthropology program at University of Cologne, I studied at Peking University and Fudan University in China. My master's research focused on a specialized village engaged in the cabinet industry, investigating how young people without access to formal higher education enter this sector and gain skills through informal learning. This study aimed to integrate perspectives from economic and educational anthropology.
Thesis Abstract
My work challenges the view of the market as a self-regulating, impersonal entity beyond individual influence or as a space solely occupied by self-interested actors. Instead, I approach the market from a processual perspective, considering emotionally, morally, historically, and culturally situated actors who are in constant negotiation, adapting their actions and beliefs through interaction. If some actors remain indifferent or inactive during negotiations, my research questions why and how they can do so. Thus, I view the market as a dynamic, evolving entity full of opportunities for moral actions and negotiations.
