Workshop
Criminal Organizations on the Borders of the Amazon: The Case of Primeiro Comando da Capital (PCC) and Comando Vermelho (CV)
17 July 2025
The proposed workshop will examine the changes related to economic, political, and social crises in South American countries, as well as, in Brazilian territory, to the expansion of two large criminal groups with national reach, the Comando Vermelho (CV) and the Primeiro Comando da Capital (PCC), to the northern region of Brazil after the end of the non-aggression pact between these groups in 2016 (Manso and Dias, 2018).
a) Analysis of Brazilian Borders in the Northern Region: Investigate the geographic, political, social, and economic characteristics of Brazilian borders in the northern region, focusing on the security implications.
b) Mode of Operation of Transnational Criminal Organizations and their impacts on local communities: Study the operations of transnational criminal organizations in border regions and their effects on local communities. This research will seek to understand not only the strategies and operating networks of these organizations but also how local communities develop strategies for coexistence or resilience under conditions of extreme violence.
The workshop will be developed as an activity to present the results of ongoing research on the northern border of Brazil (Brazil, Colombia, and Peru), lasting 3 hours, aimed at PhD researchers, Postdocs, PIs, MA students, and undergraduate students.
