The Triangle of Development, Migration and Organised Violence in the Americas

Ludger Pries

Ruhr-Universität Bochum

Either looking at the situation in Middle East or in Central America: the dynamics of poverty and lack of social and economic development, of violent conflicts and of migration and flight are inextricably interwoven and currently reinforce each other in vicious circles in Syria/Iraq and in North Central America. A similar role of controlling and buffering the impact of these vicious circles for the rich and stable countries in the North – the European Union and the USA – is being ascribed to countries of passage like Turkey and Mexico. The lecture will reflect theoretically on the triangle of migration-development-organised violence and present related empirical data for the Americas (mainly Central America-Mexico-USA) and Europe (mainly Syria-Turkey-EU).
