Indigenous Communities Experiencing and Responding to Covid-19

08.06.2021

Online Roundtable Discussion

Canada 5 – 7 a.m. / Germany 3 – 5 p.m. / Uganda 4 – 6 p.m. / Indonesia 9 – 11 p.m.

All over the world, the Covid-19 pandemic is currently having a major impact on our lives. However, concrete effects and responses to it vary greatly e.g. depending on where we live, how well our health system works, and what social and economic safety nets we can draw on. This panel brings together three indigenous representatives from Indonesia, Uganda and Canada to discuss how indigenous communities are currently experiencing the pandemic and how they envision a resilient recovery.

Amongst others we will explore the following questions:  Does Covid 19 relax or aggravate local processes and conflicts - including issues like marginalisation and indigenous identity? Is remoteness in times of Covid 19 perceived rather as curse or as blessing? How do possible future scenarios for a sustainable and resilient recovery from Covid-19 look like?  What kind of support do communities wish for from local, national and international level?

This event is open to everyone interested in the topic and will take place as a zoom-conference with the opportunity to ask questions and engage with our speakers. To register for the event please contact Sarah Mund (smund4@uni-koeln.de).
