Workshop

Proposal Writing for Early-Career Researchers

With Reinhard Klein-Arendt (ProWiss Consulting Services for Researchers)

15 December 2025

10:00 – 15:00 (CET)

Venue:  Room 3.29, Global South Studies Center (GSSC), Classen-Kappelmann-Str. 24, 50931 Cologne (in-person attendance only)

Language: English

Lunch: Provided (vegan) + small snacks and drinks.

The workshop is essentially a basic introduction to writing grant proposals for scholarships. After explaining the essential rules of proposal writing, the focus shifts to formulating the research problem, which is the starting point for any research project. Next, we will discuss the core chapters of a proposal, including ‘state of research,’ ‘project objectives,’ and ‘work plan’/‘methodology.’ The logical sequence of arguments (‘common thread’) and language that is appropriate for the recipients of the application, namely the reviewers at the funding organisation, will also be covered. If there is still time, we will discuss the pros and cons of using AI bots when writing a proposal.
The lecturer's input is, of course, an essential part of the workshop. However, as a workshop should be interactive, we are happy to answer questions from participants and (if time allows) carry out interactive exercises to consolidate the knowledge gained.
