Research Areas

Research within the GSSC is multifaceted and takes the vantage point of a number of disciplines: It is historically informed, works on different socio-political scales and is methodologically diversified and hence well qualified to conduct research on a variety of cultural dynamics. The GSSC has ample competence to grasp the spatial, social-ecological and material aspects of flows and linkages within and beyond Africa, Asia and Latin America.

The research agenda of the GSSC covers five separate yet interconnected fields of study that address salient dynamics in the Global South: the dynamics of citizenship, migration and colonial/neo-colonial labour relations, the production and flows of natural commodities and the transformation of communicative repertoires. A fifth, cross-cutting field of study is concerned with urban green spaces as tangible manifestations of current processes of urban transformations both in the Global South and the Global North.
