„Slavery and freedom re-visited: or What is a Man?“

Catherine Hall

University College London, UK

‘Britain’s involvement in slavery has been marginalised in public memory while abolition has been remembered. Drawing on the work of the Legacies of British Slave-ownership project at UCL (www.ucl.ac.uk/lbs<http://www.ucl.ac.uk/lbs>) this lecture will focus on the significance of slave-owners to the formation of modern Britain. The central question will concern the relationship between slavery and freedom as it was conceptualised by the renowned historian of eighteenth-century Jamaica, Edward Long. Long, a slave-owner himself, played an important part in the development of racial slavery in the British West Indies and through his writing was able to influence western thinking about race.’
