An Integrated Approach to Environmental Management in Bangladesh: Success Factors and Challenges

Bangladesh is a country under severe environmental stress. It has to deal (a) with a shrinking natural resource base and bio-physical degradation, and (b) with high population growth and an increasing demand for space for economic development. Problem mitigation is mainly targeted at physical aspects of conservation, resource efficiency, and socio-cultural awareness programs. Government’s plans and policies try to strengthen management approaches and global linkages. A large number of non-governmental local and international organizations are working together with government agencies. Major government policies directly addressing environment management issues were initiated during the period 1995 to 2010. Setbacks, however, arise from local poverty, lack of development alternatives, slow progress of education quality, and poor international/cross-cultural partnerships.
Raquib Ahmed holds a Ph.D. in urban geography. He is professor at the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies in Rajshahi, Bangladesh. His research interests focus on remote sensing and GIS applications in coastal and environment management as well as on the regional geography of South Asia. He held guest professorships in many Asian and European countries. Moreover, he is consultant to the Ministry of Land, Government of Bangladesh.
